What Causes Knee Pain?

Knee pain can affect anyone, regardless of athletic ability or age. Knee Pain is often the consequence of foot and hip dysfunction. Due to the architecture of the foot and hip, the knee becomes easily damaged as a result of compensation. The muscles, fascia, tendons, and ligaments supporting the knee will become irritated, and/or inflamed. When the mechanics of either the foot or hip are improper, the knee will alter or increase its range of motion which may result in pain or early degeneration.

The Mechanical (Movement Pillar) Dynamics of the Knee

Like the elbow, the knee is a hinge joint made of 3 bones – femur, tibia, fibula. Surrounding all joints there must be a balance between tension and compression of the ligaments, muscles, tendons, and fascia to maintain optimal movement health.

Mechanical knee pain is often the consequence of problems stemming from the hip and less-than-ideal foot mechanics. The knee, like the elbow, can be viewed as the middle child. It will take on stress from the area above and below – i.e. the hip complex and foot/ankle complex. This is why knee pain is often the symptom of the hip and ankle/foot movement dysfunctions.

When a local problem is determined to be a local cause, it can be due to an imbalance of soft-tissue structures. This requires mobilization and release of tight structures in addition to strengthening weak or inhibited structure of the painful joint as well as the joints above and below. But regarding pain – not performance – and the knee, rehab is often very simple.

Common Knee Centric Diagnoses for Which We Screen

These are a few common diagnoses we screen and treat for regarding knee symptoms. This list is not exhaustive as many symptoms and concerns do not have great diagnoses.

  5. Osteoarthritis
  6. Sprain/Strains
  7. Myalgia
  8. Radiculopathy
  9. Myofascial Trigger Points
  10. Ligament Tears: ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL

Is Knee Pain a Knee Problem

26 %
of knee pain is originating within the spine

According to the Extremity Pain of Spinal Source (EXPOSS) study, 26% of knee pain is originating within the spine when mechanical (Movement Pillar) in nature.1 This means, if a healthcare provider is not assessing the spine as the possible source of the problem, he or she only has a successful starting point of 74%. According to our academic standards, this is passing but not great. Our programs help to eliminate the need for unproductive interventions saving you time, money, and frustrations.
